IVBC Members Reach Record 257,445.84 Cumulative Miles Ridden in 2009!
(Go to Newsletter tab for complete list)
The Iowa Valley Bicycle Club of Marshalltown held its annual mileage awards meeting on March 10th. Each year the club totals the combined miles for all the members. The club has had a goal of reaching ¼ of a million miles ridden by all its members. This year we reached that goal with a total of 257,445.84 cumulative miles. Forty-three club members rode more than 2000 miles in 2009. IVBC, however, would not have reached the ¼ million mark without the miles ridden by each and every one of its members.
Individual awards were also presented for members riding 5 centuries or more. Those members included Lanny Nuese, Bill Hawk, Joel Ludwig, Brad Bosworth, Pat Beurskens, Tom Kurth, John Sheehy and Roger Vreeland. Members riding their first century were Bob Backes, Guy Buchwald, and Greg Davis. Two members, Richard Henningsen and Ken Zak, actually rode 16 centuries a piece. Ken Zak also rode a double-century in 2009.
Individual awards went to Ken Zak as the top male rider with a total of 10,014. Gabrielle Coughlin was the top female rider with 5,790 and Gabrielle teamed with her husband, Pat, to have the most family mileage with a total of 11,580 miles.

Ken Zak is a Wisconsin member of our bike club. He first became connected with IVBC in 2008 when he signed up to go on RAGBRAI, and he has been a member since then. In 2009, Ken rode more miles than any other member (totaling 10,014--including 16 centuries and a double century)! I wanted to include a link to his Utah biking trip. If you have time, it's well worth the time to look at this beautiful show. http://www.gallery.me.com/kenrillazak/100123 The user name is guest and the password is biking. There are also slide shows of all their hiking adventures in Utah you can watch as well if interested. All you would have to do once on the website is to click 'My Gallery' (upper left hand corner) to view them. If anyone has any problems viewing the website, Ken & Rilla would be more than willing to help them via e-mail at Ken and Rilla Zak.

Rilla and Ken Zak with Oscar
The following is from an interview with Ken:
"I've been a member of the IVBC since Nov 2008; the IVBC was highly recommended to me by a good friend, Jackie Hartwick. I've been riding my bike longer than I can remember, but seriously since 2001. I've been managing and driving for a trucking company for the last 31 years. For 36 years I've been married to my best friend, Rilla, and we have a little Smooth Coat Fox Terrier named 'Oscar'.
I would have to say whenever, whereever, and with whom ever I'm riding my bike is my favorite ride. RAGBRAI is hard to beat for its fun times and unique character. Plus I've met one of my very best friends on RAGBRAI. Our Utah trip was a biking dream come true. I had to pinch myself many times to really believe it was happening that I was actually riding through such grandeur!
Future biking goals? Well, I plan on riding the perimeter of the US, the Louis & Clark Trail, and I'd love to try and ride as many of our Nations Scenic Byways, and roads with the title of All American Highways, such as Hwy. 12 in Utah. It would be a dream to ride as many different states as I can that have organized rides across their state like RAGBRAI does!
I feel extremely fortunate for this June/July I'll be riding with friends in the south of France in the Pyrenees for 2 weeks! My trusty bike full of memories is a Lemond Poprad. Other interests we have are are wilderness canoe tripping, camping, hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, birding, photography (capturing special moments in time), and enjoying and appreciating the people I love, and making more memories!
If anyone is interested in more information, such as roads I rode in the slideshow or places to visit along the way, places to camp or stay, again they may contact us via e-mail. I'd be glad to talk to them and help in anyway I can in planning their trips." Email Ken and Rilla Zak.
